Behind is a song I wrote in 2023. The songs I write for voice and piano/guitar tend to take much longer to write. I sit with the words for quite a long time before I perform or rehearse them. This was recorded with my dear friend, Abigail Grosch. I’m singing and playing guitar.
Behind (2023)
I wanna be thankful for you
and pull out all the years
See all the lines of faces
draw behind now
And I’m proud to be shared by you
let me be used by you
What was left behind?
Did you forget your keys, now?
Such a pain to ask for a locksmith at this hour
Did you forget to call back,
when I was up all night?
I can’t fall asleep without
you on the other line
I am so grateful for you
and I’m proud of who you are
It’s like I’m changing loads
but that’s so far
It’s all on the clothesline now,
let me be pinned by you
But it’s such a pain to hang up
so talk soon, call again
It’s like the passing of the morning,
always turning from red
I feel you behind now,
pushing like a door
It’s like the violence of a washing machine,
better to be outside than in
I am just so happy for you
and I’m glad that you’re well
I know mirrors don’t cast shadows,
only sunshine
But the distance between,
and the depth of the walls
Ahead
What was left behind?
Did I ever say “goodbye?“
You know that I kick myself
when I say it a second time
Did I forget to call back,
when you were up all night?
Can you close your eyes now
without me turning off the lights?
