8 Threads was my thesis composition for my master’s degree at DePaul University.
The material for this piece was derived from a set of melodic fragments that were procedurally flattened. Replicating this flattening process allowed me to compress and unfurl melodic threads that could be used freely to transition between each other.
Some notable comments on form: the piece is divided into 5 spaces that address these melodic threads with different answers on texture, character, and orchestration. I believe one of the most striking parts of this piece is the ending, where I use the final thread to construct an isorhythm functioning on different cycles between the gongs and low extreme of the piano.
